Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers: A book review

Title: Grave Mercy (His Fair Assassin #1)

Author: Robin LaFevers

Started Date: July 14, 2012

Finished Date: July 20, 2012

Rating: 5/5 stars

“Young, beautiful and deadly. Trained as an assassin by the god of Death, Ismae is sent to the court of Brittany, where she finds herself under prepared – not only for the games of intrigue and treason, but for the impossible choices she must make. For how can she deliver Death’s vengeance upon a target who, against her will, has stolen her heart?”

I finished this book last night and I’m having a hard time giving it a proper review because of how incredibly awesome and amazing it is. I’ve been hearing a lot of good things about it, and I’m so eager to have a printed copy. I ordered a paperback copy at the Book Depository because it is not yet available in our local bookstores. The moment I got my hands on this book, which actually made me scream, I started reading it. I’ve learned that it’s a YA with a twist of historical romance and I find it very unique. The start is very interesting, it’s a real page turner, and I couldn’t bring myself to drop it. But when it came to the part where it was hard for me to absorb and digest it, I stopped. I had a hard time with the writing style, and some of the terminologies and political issues. But I used to read a lot of historical romance books with politics, and I was reminded that they were the ones that started my book addiction. LOL! So I’ve learned to adapt eventually and enjoy everything about it.
I love the characters, and Ismae is now my new favorite heroine. I can’t help but compare Ismae to Katsa from Graceling, since they are both assassins and have special ability. But of course, they are different, Ismae is a daughter of god of death, trained at the convent as Death’s handmaiden and she excels with poisons. I like her because of her strength and bravery, she was never annoying or confused at times. I like the part where she met Duval, how they clash every time, and how the romance was developed. Duval, on the other hand is a perfect match for Ismae, he is sometimes rude at her, but he’s a also a tease and a sweet man, and he loves and protects his family so much.

Grave Mercy is a kind of book that will be loved by everyone! And it is for you to find out for yourself, and you will never be disappointed. I love it and it is now in my favorite shelf. I can’t wait for the next book to come out!! (It’s a new story which is about Sybella, also one of the characters here.)

Here’s my favorite quote from Duval and I really cried upon reading it.
“Whenever you are ready, if you never are, my heart is yours, until Death do us part. Whatever that may mean when consorting with one of Death’s handmaidens.”

*sigh* I definitely love it!

Stacking The Shelves #7

This means you can include books you buy in physical store or online, books you borrow from friends or the library, review books, gifts and of course ebooks!

I’m so excited to post my book haul for this week!! Since this is a birthday week for me, granted that it’s a month-long celebration, and even though it’s still 3 more days to go before the day itself, I’ve already bought gifts for myself! Of course, they’re books! Actually, my mom gave me money yesterday as a birthday gift because she’ll miss my party, she’s in New Jersey for a 6-month vacation. (Well, I’m here in the Philippines and I think we’re 18 hours apart, but I’m not sure, LOL!)

This has been a great week for me, I’ve got a lot of books, mostly paperbacks, and I’m definitely happy!!

I won this book, Fever by Lauren DeStefano, from a book giveaway hosted by Janus at The Blair Book Project and it arrived  last Monday. 😉

I received this book, Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers, from The Book Depository last Thursday! 😉

I bought these books yesterday at Fullybooked Greenbelt 3 and they were all with 20% discount! So happy because the store also celebrates their 5th birthday! And they’re on sale until Sunday!

Incarnate by Jodi Meadows (hardbound)

Perfect Chemistry by Simone Elkeles (paperback)

Starcrossed by Josephine Angelini (paperback)

Tiger’s Curse by Colleen Houck: A book review

Title: Tiger’s Curse

Author: Colleen Houck

Started Date: July 2, 2012

Finished Date: July 6, 2012

Rating: 5/5 stars

“Passion. Fate. Loyalty.

Would you risk it all to change your destiny?

The last thing Kelsey Hayes thought she’d be doing this summer was trying to break a 300-year-old Indian curse. With a mysterious white tiger named Ren. Halfway around the world. But that’s exactly what happened. Face-to-face with dark forces, spellbinding magic, and mystical worlds where nothing is what it seems, Kelsey risks everything to piece together an ancient prophecy that could break the curse forever.

Tiger’s Curse is the exciting first volume in an epic fantasy-romance that will leave you breathless and yearning for more.”

I love it so much! So so so much! I can’t even find the right words to describe how I feel about this book! I’ve been meaning to read this for such a long time, and I didn’t know why I read it just now. There are so many things I love about this book, and the list will come a long way, so I’ll just say what really made me hooked in this series. First, the story line is very unique, I love the idea of a 300-year old curse of a gorgeous prince. I know it started slow but it really took off when they arrived in India. The wonderful adventure of Kelsey and Ren started on that part. I was introduced to the Indian myths, goddesses and their culture. I must say I’m impressed with Colleen Houck, of how she researched well and how she incorporated into her writing. Second, I love all the characters! Especially Ren, the prince who turned to a tiger long time ago and together with Kelsey, they have to go a quest to break the curse. I just love everything about him and I want more. LOL! Kelsey, on the other hand, is also an amazing character, she’s strong and courageous. Third, I love how the romance developed through their journey. I’m so jealous with Kelsey, and I almost hate her for being so annoying and insecure. If she will not claim Ren, I’m very much willing to have him! LOL!
Anyway, I highly recommend this book to everyone, especially to those who love fantasy, adventure and romance combined into one! 😉
My favorite lines from Ren:

“I don’t want you to see only a tiger when you look at me. I want you to see me. The man.”-Ren, chaper 17

“Now turn around and go to sleep. I’m warning you that I plan to sleep with you in my arms all night long.”-Ren, chapter 21

Cover Reveal: REQUIEM by Lauren Oliver

As an active member of goodreads, which means I’m almost 15 hours online there everyday, I just saw the cover yesterday and I was definitely shocked when I saw it! Here’s the cover of the upcoming third book in the Delirium series from Lauren Oliver. I’m so freaking excited!!!

“Now an active member of the resistance, Lena has been transformed. The nascent rebellion that was under way in Pandemonium has ignited into an all-out revolution in Requiem, and Lena is at the center of the fight. Of Pandemonium, ALA Booklist noted that “like all successful second volumes, this expands the world and ups the stakes, setting us up for the big finale.”

After rescuing Julian from a death sentence, Lena and her friends fled to the Wilds. But the Wilds are no longer a safe haven—pockets of rebellion have opened throughout the country, and the government cannot deny the existence of Invalids. Regulators now infiltrate the borderlands to stamp out the rebels, and as Lena navigates the increasingly dangerous terrain, her best friend, Hana, lives a safe, loveless life in Portland as the fiancée of the young mayor. Requiem is told from both Lena’s and Hana’s points of view. The two girls live side by side in a world that divides them until, at last, their stories converge.”

Shocked is just an exaggeration! LOL! I know the cover matches the first two books but this one seems a bit creepy for me. She’s the same girl right? But I can’t describe the way the girl smiles in this photo, wait, I’m not even sure if that’s a smile! But something’s wrong in her eyes, they’re too lifeless. Anyway, even though I don’t like the cover, I’m definitely excited for this book, it’ll be out next year! Have you read the description? It says that the book will be narrated by Lena and Hana, and that is another big surprise to me. Why Hana? What’s her role??? I know she’s the best friend, but will she play a huge role in Lena’s life? Well, that makes me more curious and excited, especially the fact that there will be more Alex!! I miss him! and I miss Julian too! *squeal!*

Are you a fan of the Delirium series? Let me know what you think! 😉

Waiting on Wednesday #6

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine. It features each blogger’s most anticipated books.

This week, my pick is Onyx (Lux #2)

” Being connected to Daemon Black sucks…

Daemon’s determined to prove what he feels for me is more than a product of our bizarre connection. I’ve sworn him off even though he’s running more hot than cold these days. But against all common sense, I’m falling for him. Hard.

Our relationship issues aren’t out biggest problem…

The Department of Defense is here. If they ever find out what Daemon can do and that we’re linked, I’m a goner. So is he. And when a new boy shows up a school with a secret of his own, things get complicated fast. I need to choose between my own instincts and Daemon’s.

But then everything changes…

I’ve seen someone who shouldn’t be alive. Daemon’s never going to stop searching until gets the truth. What happened to his brother? Who betrayed him? And what does the DOD want from them—from me?

No one is who they seem. And not everyone will survive the lies.”

 Why I Can’t Wait:

I’ve just read the first book, Obsidian, last week in a buddy read in one of my  goodreads group. I freakingly loved it! It’s so awesome! But I didn’t make a review of it because I’m so overwhelmed with how great the book is. I know it has some flaws, but I couldn’t remember them because of Daemon! He’s a hot guy and gorgeous, and now I understand all the girl readers that are so crazy about him!
