Stacking The Shelves #21

stackingStacking the Shelves is a new meme hosted by Tynga’s Reviews, which is all about sharing the books you are adding to your shelves, may it be physical or virtual. This means you can include books you buy in physical store or online, books you borrow from friends or the library, review books, gifts and of course ebooks!

First of all, I’d like to greet everyone a belated Merry Christmas and advance Happy New Year!  ♥♥♥

I hope you all had fun celebrating the Christmas and of course, shopping books! You all did ask for books as Christmas gifts, right? I know it, because I did! LOL! And here’s my recent haul:

City of Glass (The Mortal Instruments,#3) by Cassandra Clare (paperback)

City of Fallen Angels (The Mortal Instruments, #4) by Cassandra Clare (paperback)

City of Lost Souls (The Mortal Instruments #5) by Cassandra Clare (paperback)

As You Wish by Jackson Pierce (paperback)

I got them at Fullybooked last Wednesday. And I’m reading City of Glass today! I’m so addicted with The Mortal Instruments series right now! I wanted to wait for the whole series to finish, but it seems that 2014 seems a long wait. And the movie is coming out next year, so I guess I should be ready about it.  🙂

That’s all! How about you? What did you get this week?

Waiting On Wednesday #20: School Spirits by Rachel Hawkins

New WoWWaiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine. It features each blogger’s most anticipated books.

This week, my pick is School Spirits by Rachel Hawkins

school spirits

“Fifteen-year-old Izzy Brannick was trained to fight monsters. For centuries, her family has hunted magical creatures. But when Izzy’s older sister vanishes without a trace while on a job, Izzy’s mom decides they need to take a break.

Izzy and her mom move to a new town, but they soon discover it’s not as normal as it appears. A series of hauntings has been plaguing the local high school, and Izzy is determined to prove her worth and investigate. But assuming the guise of an average teenager is easier said than done. For a tough girl who’s always been on her own, it’s strange to suddenly make friends and maybe even have a crush.

Can Izzy trust her new friends to help find the secret behind the hauntings before more people get hurt?”

Why I Can’t Wait:

OMG! I was really surprised when I learned about this spin-off series!  The first thing that came to my mind is Cal. Am I going to read about him again? It is entitled School Spirits, so I’m hoping that I’ll get to read about Cal again? *sigh* I want a separate story about him. Anyway, I hope this spin-off series will be better than the Hex Hall series. 🙂

Expected Publication:

City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare: A book review

city of ashesTitle: City of Ashes

Author: Cassandra Clare

Started Date: December 20, 2012

Finished Date: December 24, 2012

Rating: 5/5 stars

Summary from Goodreads:

“Clary Fray just wishes that her life would go back to normal. But what’s normal when you’re a demon-slaying Shadowhunter, your mother is in a magically induced coma, and you can suddenly see Downworlders like werewolves, vampires, and faeries? If Clary left the world of the Shadowhunters behind, it would mean more time with her best friend, Simon, who’s becoming more than a friend. But the Shadowhunting world isn’t ready to let her go — especially her handsome, infuriating, newfound brother, Jace. And Clary’s only chance to help her mother is to track down rogue Shadowhunter Valentine, who is probably insane, certainly evil — and also her father.

To complicate matters, someone in New York City is murdering Downworlder children. Is Valentine behind the killings — and if he is, what is he trying to do? When the second of the Mortal Instruments, the Soul-Sword, is stolen, the terrifying Inquisitor arrives to investigate and zooms right in on Jace. How can Clary stop Valentine if Jace is willing to betray everything he believes in to help their father?”

Awesome book from the series!

I admit I have few confessions to make. I’ve read City of Bones last year, yes, it took me a year to finally read the sequel. I didn’t like it that much, City of Bones wasn’t able to connect to me and give me the urge to read the next. Then, my friend gave me City of Ashes as a gift this Christmas day and I decided to give it another try since EVERYONE loves the series. Also, I’ve read the Infernal Devices series and I want to understand the connection. On another note, the movie is coming out next year, I’d like to be up and ready. LOL! And I’m glad that I’ve read it, it’s definitely an action-packed adventure and a twist of emotions!

The characters have really made me love the whole book. I’m still not a fan of Clary though, maybe because she’s confuse most of the time. Simon or Jace? Jace or Simon? Ugh. I know she has a very complicated situation right now, but she needs to know what she really wants. Ok, I’ll give her time. LOL! Well, she’s likable sometimes, especially on the last part, for saving the day. LOL! I like Simon, he’s a great person and I believe that Clary doesn’t deserve him at all. I’ll be happy if he will have someone that’s right for him. Anyway, Alec and Magnus Bane for the win! LOL!

Having read the Infernal Devices first, I can’t help but compare Jace and Will. They are somehow the same in such ways, they are both very handsome and troubled, they also have the same family issues. Anyway, let’s stick to Jace here. LOL! It’s impossible not to fall in love with him, and I’ll be getting the next book to read more of him! Yay! Here’s my favorite quote from him:
“Every time you almost die, I almost die myself.”

What a good way to end a review! A quote from Jace! *squeals!!!*

My Top 5 Favorite Movies this year!

2012 favorite movies

Yes, I do love watching movies!!! I admit I’ve watched less movies this year, but I promise that I’ll be watching the ones I missed, especially Brave, Wrath of the Titans, This Means War, and many more. Today, I’d like to share with all of you my TOP 5 FAVORITE MOVIES the year 2012! So why only 5? Well, this post will be longer if I shared my top 10, right? LOL! Before anything else, I hope you don’t judge me that much on my picks, but I rate the movies by how much I enjoyed it, not by the casting, script, director, actors, or any such movie-related techniques. I love them because I enjoyed watching them, I had a good laugh or if I cried a bunch. Anyway, here they are:

Summary from IMDB:

“Katniss Everdeen voluntarily takes her younger sister’s place in the Hunger Games, a televised fight to the death in which two teenagers from each of the twelve Districts of Panem are chosen at random to compete.”

My thoughts.

Of course, first on the list is my favorite book of all time, The Hunger Games. I love it, and I cried on how much it was beautifully made into movie. For me, it was perfect! Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson have portrayed their roles so well. I can’t wait for Catching Fire and see them all over again! 🙂

Summary from IMDB:

“Peter Parker finds a clue that might help him understand why his parents disappeared when he was young. His path puts him on a collision course with Dr. Curt Connors, his father’s former partner.”

My thoughts.

At first, I was like “A Spiderman movie?!! Again???!!!”. But when I saw that it’s a different version, I got very excited to see it. And it never failed me in any way. I laughed most of the time! And I felt a connection with Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker, I began to like him along the way. Did I tell you that I have this crush on Emma Stone? LOL! She’s so pretty, though I like her much better with red hair. 🙂

Summary from IMDB:

“Dracula, who operates a high-end resort away from the human world, goes into overprotective mode when a boy discovers the resort and falls for the count’s teen-aged daughter.”

My thoughts.

This movie is definitely a huge surprise to me! My boyfriend wanted to watch it even though he’s not a movie addict like me. I had fun watching it, it was so funny, I couldn’t stop myself from laughing so hard! The characters are so cool, especially Dracula, Jonathan and Mavis. But I love every one of them! And the best part for me is the ending where they sang a cute song called “Zing”. If you’ve watched the movie, I’m sure you know the song that I’m talking about. 🙂

Summary from IMDB:

“Sean Anderson partners with his mom’s husband on a mission to find his grandfather, who is thought to be missing on a mythical island.”

My thoughts.

I’ve watched the first movie “Journey to the Center of the Earth” and that’s where I began to love Josh Hutcherson. Well, let’s admit it, he was really cute as a child. LOL! I’ve watched it in 3D and they definitely did a good job. I love the adventure and I enjoyed the journey. 🙂

Summary from IMDB:

“When the evil spirit Pitch launches an assault on Earth, the Immortal Guardians team up to protect the innocence of children all around the world.”

My thoughts.

This movie is still very fresh in my mind because I just watched it last Saturday with one of my close friends. We wanted to see the 3D version, but it wasn’t available. Anyway, the characters are so lovable! Jack Frost is so amazing! And he’s cute too! *giggles*. My favorite is the SandMan, I want to hug him if he’s real! LOL! This movie brought out the child in me, it got me thinking if I believed them when I was a child. I know the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy, and of course Santa, and a little bit about SandMan. Yes, I’m not familiar with Jack Frost, because I’m living in a tropical country and we don’t have snow.  I enjoyed it so much, and I think every kid did too. 🙂

That’s all! Of course, I also do love THE AVENGERS, but it disappointed me in such a way I didn’t expect, or maybe it was over rated. I’m not sure, but I saddened me because they made fun of Loki. I also enjoyed Underworld Awakening, but not much. 😉

How about you, what are the movies you enjoyed this year? 😉

Defiance by C.J. Redwine: A book review

defianceTitle: Defiance

Author: C.J. Redwine

Started Date: December 11, 2012

Finished Date: December 14, 2012

Rating: 4/5 stars

Summary from Goodreads:

“Within the walls of Baalboden, beneath the shadow of the city’s brutal leader, Rachel Adams has a secret. While other girls sew dresses and obey their male Protectors, Rachel knows how to survive in the wilderness and deftly wield a sword. When her father, Jared, fails to return from a courier mission and is declared dead, the Commander assigns Rachel a new Protector, her father’s apprentice, Logan–the same boy Rachel declared her love for two years ago, and the same one who handed her heart right back to her. Left with nothing but a fierce belief in her father’s survival, Rachel decides to escape and find him herself. But treason against the Commander carries a heavy price, and what awaits her in the Wasteland could destroy her.

At nineteen, Logan McEntire is many things. Orphan. Outcast. Inventor. As apprentice to the city’s top courier, Logan is focused on learning his trade so he can escape the tyranny of Baalboden. But his plan never included being responsible for his mentor’s impulsive daughter. Logan is determined to protect her, but when his escape plan goes wrong and Rachel pays the price, he realizes he has more at stake than disappointing Jared.

As Rachel and Logan battle their way through the Wasteland, stalked by a monster that can’t be killed and an army of assassins out for blood, they discover romance, heartbreak, and a truth that will incite a war decades in the making.”

When I started reading it, I was a bit confused about what genre it belongs. It feels like dystopian but with a very dark fantasy twists in it. I like the drama at the very start, it was actually hard to put it down. What I liked much about this book is the alternative POVs of Logan and Rachel. It is easy to differentiate them, and understand their individual thoughts. Sometimes, different POVs confuse me but it never happened in this book. I love Logan’s POV so much, I can’t help but admire him. He’s so strong and brave, and I like his self control, LOL! Yes, there are a lot of tension between Rachel and Logan.

I would have given this book 5 starts if not because of Rachel. I have to admit that I had mixed emotions about her. (I don’t like her name, Rachel Adams, kind of reminds me of an actress, LOL). But kidding aside, the title of the book really suits her. I wanted to like her, especially because she’s a kick-ass heroine who loves weapons and has a massive collection of them. But she’s also immature and she lacks reasoning. She just acts on impulse. She becomes worse as the story goes. And she really did something that made me hate her more.

I abolutely want to kill the Commander! OMG, he’s so cruel and horrible! I couldn’t stand him! If only I can erase him in this book! LOL!

Anyway, despite of these characters, I still love it because of Logan! I can’t believe how much she loves Rachel even if she’s so impossible and hard to deal with. She’s indeed lucky to have him.

I highly recommend this book to everyone who loves a dark world, weapons and bloody fights, a heroine that you will love or hate, and a hero who loves that kind of girl. 🙂

Rules of Attraction by Simone Elkeles: A book review

rules of attractionTitle: Rules of Attraction

Author: Simone Elkeles

Started Date: December 4, 2012

Finished Date: December 5, 2012

Rating: 5/5 stars

Summary from Goodreads:

“When Carlos Fuentes returns to America after living in Mexico for a year, he doesn’t want any part of the life his older brother, Alex, has laid out for him at a high school in Colorado. Carlos likes living his life on the edge and wants to carve his own path—just like Alex did. Then he meets Kiara Westford. She doesn’t talk much and is completely intimidated by Carlos’ wild ways. As they get to know one another, Carlos assumes Kiara thinks she’s too good for him, and refuses to admit that she might be getting to him. But he soon realizes that being himself is exactly what Kiara needs right now.”

ANOTHER AMAZING BOOK FROM SIMONE ELKELES!!! I found another book boyfriend, definitely swoon worthy! Carlos, you got me breaking the rules! LOL!

I’m in love again! And I’m wondering if it’s okay to have two brothers for myself? LOL! I love Alex from Perfect Chemistry, and I admit it took me a long time to read the sequel because I’m too in love with him. I didn’t expect that they’ll have the same effect on me. Can I marry both and take them home??? LOL!

I love this book, it rocked my world, every chapter made me want for more. I think this is funnier and lighter than the first. The characters are so cool! At first, Carlos kind of annoyed me, it felt like he’s too bad to everyone. But he gradually changed and he’s like the sweetest bad boy I’ve ever met. LOL! And let’s admit it, he’s too hot! Kiara, on the other hand, is such a good girl with a lot of insecurities and imperfections, but those things really made her so likable. There are so many things to like about her, so I’m very happy that she gets to have Carlos. I understand all her qualities that made him fall hopelessly in love with her. I also like Tuck, Kiara’s gay best friend, he’s too funny! Her family is so cool, especially her dad, the professor, I didn’t expect that he’ll play a big role here. And of course, I love it because Alex is in it, along with his very lucky girlfriend, Brittany!

I think you can guess my favorite part from the book. Yes, that part, the scene from that book cover. *sigh*
Here are my favorite lines from Carlos:
“Tonight was… well, it was perfect for me too. You’ve turned my world upside down. I’ve fallen in love with you, chica, and it scares the fuckin’ shit outta me. I’ve been shakin’ all night, because I knew it.I’ve tried to deny it, to make you think I wanted you as a fake girlfriend, but that was a lie.”

“I’m in deep shit, cause I think I’d like nothing better than to wake up with her every morning.”
